Experiment in AR

Assignment: Create a simple AR interaction in Unity using the laptop webcam and an image target

Idea: I wanted to create a silly AR experience that placed my beard on different people. For this exercise, I decided to put my beard on my niece and nephew.

Process: The process of getting a target-based AR experience to work in Unity is pretty straightforward once Vuforia is set up. I followed Gabe’s tutorial and created assets in Photoshop to use for my target image and replacement image.

Next Steps: Unfortunately, during the live demo in class, Unity began to crash. It continued to crash even after trying to uninstall and re-install early stable builds. I’ve now had to completely remove Unity from my computer. However— the process was much more engaging and interesting than I had expected before doing this assignment. I’d like to try completing more of the Unity tutorials when I can get Unity successfully installed on my computer and see whether 3D modeling, game-building and/or AR can be part of my toolkit moving forward at ITP.
